40 Years of Hydraulic Innovation: The Story of Vega Cylinders Since 1986

For almost 40 years, Vega Cylinders has specialized exclusively in hydraulic cylinders for injection molds, die-casting systems, industrial automation, and high-performance tooling applications.

From a small hydraulic shop in Italy to an international industrial group serving 37 countries, Vega’s growth has always been driven by engineering, reliability, and innovation.

The Origins: Experience Before Vega

FormaFluid 1980

Before Vega Srl was founded in 1986, Aldo Formenti had already started his first hydraulic business, FormaFluid, active between 1980 and 1986.

This early experience created the technical and commercial foundation that later became Vega Cylinders.

1986–1988: The Beginning of Vega Srl

First Shop 1986

Vega Srl was officially founded in 1986 by Aldo Formenti.

The company started with only three people in a small office and hydraulic retail shop in Italy.

At the beginning, Vega supplied hydraulic products and designed custom hydraulic cylinders manufactured by external suppliers.

Even at this early stage, the company focused on speed, customization, and technical support.

1988–1995: The First Internal Production Facility

First Production 1988

In 1988, Vega moved into its first real production facility.

The new location covered around 350 square meters and employed seven people.

This was a crucial step in the company’s history.

For the first time, Vega developed its own technical department and began building what later became known as the “Vega Standard”.

The production area included:

  • saw machines,
  • raw material storage,
  • rod machining lathes,
  • hydraulic testing units,
  • assembly benches,
  • magnetic sensor testing equipment.

During these years, Vega became one of the first companies in the sector to develop hydraulic cylinders with magnetic position sensors.

The company also became known for unusually fast delivery times, often between two and three weeks.

1995–2001: Building Reliability and International Growth

In 1995, Vega entered a new phase of industrial growth.

The company expanded production capacity, assembly operations, stock management, and component finishing processes.

The team reached 10 people and Vega created its first commercial office.

During these years, the company completely changed its engineering philosophy.

The goal was no longer simply to supply hydraulic cylinders quickly.

The objective became much more ambitious:
to create hydraulic cylinders capable of working reliably inside molds for many years.

Vega invested heavily in:

  • product quality,
  • technical problem solving,
  • thermal and chemical treatments,
  • international marketing,
  • global industrial exhibitions.

This period marked the beginning of Vega’s international reputation.

International Expansion and the China Vision

Vega started exporting to European countries in 1989.

The first important international markets were:

  • France,
  • Portugal,
  • Czech Republic,
  • Poland.

However, the company understood very early that global manufacturing was rapidly moving toward Asia.

In 2003, Vega recognized the industrial transformation created by globalization and the growing importance of China.

This vision led Alessandro Formenti to found Guangzhou Vega Hydraulic in 2004.

The first Chinese office officially opened in 2006.

Today, the Chinese operation includes eight people and represents one of the most important chapters in Vega’s international growth.

China became Vega’s most important export market, reaching its peak around 2019.

Today, the company exports to 37 countries with 30 distributors worldwide.

2001–Today: The Modern Vega Era

Vega from 2001

In 2001, Vega moved into its current headquarters.

The modern facility covers approximately 1450 square meters and represents the transformation of Vega into a modern industrial engineering company.

Today the Italian headquarters includes:

  • CNC horizontal machining centers,
  • CNC lathes with Y axis,
  • automated tube production systems,
  • hydraulic testing laboratories,
  • vertical warehouses,
  • assembly departments,
  • material quality control areas,
  • technical and engineering offices.

The company currently employs 47 people globally:

  • 30 in Italy,
  • 7 in Czech Republic,
  • 8 in China,
  • 2 in Malaysia.

Every year, Vega produces around 10,000 hydraulic cylinders.

The company offers approximately 2 million possible product configurations.

Digital Engineering and Online Configuration

One of the most important innovations in Vega’s modern history has been digital engineering.

The current headquarters became the birthplace of:

  • the Vega CAD configurator,
  • online quotation systems,
  • automatic delivery calculation,
  • automatic pricing systems,
  • 3D CAD downloads,
  • MES digital production systems.

Customers can configure hydraulic cylinders online while instantly receiving:

  • technical data,
  • CAD files,
  • pricing,
  • weight,
  • estimated delivery times.

This digital approach significantly accelerated engineering workflows for mold makers and industrial manufacturers worldwide.

Hydraulic Cylinders Designed for Long-Term Reliability

Vega hydraulic cylinders are designed for demanding industrial applications including:

  • plastic injection molds,
  • automotive tooling,
  • die-casting systems,
  • packaging equipment,
  • medical industry applications.

The average operational life of a Vega hydraulic cylinder can exceed 10 years depending on application conditions and mold engineering quality.

This long-term reliability philosophy has been one of the key elements behind Vega’s international reputation.

Looking Toward the Future

After nearly 40 years, Vega Cylinders continues to evolve.

The company combines Italian engineering, global industrial experience, digital manufacturing systems, and advanced hydraulic technology.

What started as a small hydraulic business in Italy has become an international engineering organization serving customers across Europe, Asia, and global industrial markets.

The mission remains the same:
to create reliable hydraulic solutions designed for real industrial applications.
